September 25−October 1, 2016. Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights. The Library of Congress created an exhibit, Books that Shaped America, that explores books that have had a profound effect on American life. Banned books are books or other printed works such as essays or plays which are prohibited by law or to which free access is not permitted by other means.
